From Pitched to Pitching: What I Learned as a Dragon at Dame Alice Owen’s School
Ten years ago, I stood nervously in front of a panel at The Prince’s Trust, (Now the King's Trust_ pitching an idea that would one day become Vurchoo. It was a defining moment—the kind of experience that stays with you.
So when our charity partner Teach A Man to Fish invited me to be a "Dragon" for Dame Alice Owen’s School, I said yes without hesitation.
The challenge was simple: students from Year 7 to Year 10 had to create a business, present their idea, and pitch to a panel of judges. But the outcomes were anything but ordinary.
One team of Year 7 students stood out. They launched a 3D printing business, showcased an impressive prototype, and delivered a confident pitch, outperforming older students and earning the cash prize from Teach A Man to Fish.
Watching them reminded me of myself. The ambition. The creativity. The nervous energy. But most of all, the spark that says, “Why not me?”
It was a full-circle moment, seeing how the support I once received can now be paid forward.
Supporting young entrepreneurs matters. It’s not just about business skills; it’s about belief. That’s why Vurchoo exists, not just to create beautiful jewellery, but to make real impact.
Whether through education projects we support globally, or moments like these at home, it’s always been about more than jewellery.
Because even the smallest step can shape someone’s future.
